c. 1750 Colonial American Era, Cased Pair of Flintlock “Turn-Off” Cannon Barrel Traveling Pistols, by “P J Morelle,” France, Choice Extremely Fine.
This choice Pair of French Flintlock turn-off Cannon Barrel Traveling Pistols was produced by "P J Morelle". They have 4.25" long multistage octagon-to-round iron turn-off cannon barrels. The design is wonderfully engraved and attractive, haaving Engraved Silver-plated brass furniture including their fine decorative butt caps. Their round convex lock plates are engraved with maker's name, and made with rare "Dog Lock" safety hooks. Their stocks are solid with high relief carving around the barrel tangs and parts, each pistol measuring 8.25" in overall length. Both pistols are in good mechanical working order. These pistols were cased later in their working life. They are housed in a late 18th century mahogany box measures 10.5" wide x 3.25" high x 7.5" deep with reinforced inset brass corners, reinforcing straps, and flush mounted carrying handle engraved with the letters "J B". The interior of this box is lined in the correct period green baize fabric and has 2 compartments, each with wood lids with natural white bone lifting knobs. One section is for holding lead balls, and the other holding loading and cleaning patches. Accessories include a very nice quality and condition decorative brass powder flask, an iron bullet mold, a small turn-screw, and a two-piece cleaning rod. Overall, a very valuable choice quality cased brace of mated Flintlock Traveling Pistols, having excellent originality and eye appeal.
