George Gibbs was a famous quality English gun maker. The company was founded in Bristol in 1830 as J&G Gibbs and renamed G Gibbs in 1835. The company has gained an impressive record of innovation, adaptation and tenacity making muzzle loading shotguns and rifles of the highest quality including Samuel Baker's first 4 bore heavy charge rifle under the direction of the founder George Gibbs Sr. Single nickel bead sight on the smooth concave rib marked "GEORGE GIBBS, 29 CORN ST. BRISTOL". Marked "GEORGE. GIBBS" on each lock. The locks, hammers, stock wedge escutcheons and trigger guard are engraved with fine English scroll designs. Multi-design engraved pineapple finial. Checkered half straight grip stock with a cheekpiece, iron shotgun buttplate and silver initial oval. With an ebony ramrod/cleaning rod with brass tip. Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches. Comes in a wooden case with recessed handle and inset brass shield on the lid and wine colored velvet lining with a George Gibbs Ltd. Label affixed to the inside of the lid. In the case is a shot bag sling, three-piece wooden cleaning rod, powder flask, one small and one large partially full cap tin, two ebony handled screwdrivers, ebony handled patch cutter and a James Dixon oiler.

Very good. Partially refinished, the barrels which retain much of the brown finish, with areas of smooth gray patina. Most of the Damascus pattern is visible. The trigger guard bow retains 95% blue finish with edge and high point wear, while the tang and finial have a smooth mottled gray patina. The locks retain 20% original case colors in protected areas with a smooth gray patina on the balance, as well as on the hammers. The buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The stock is also very good with some mild crazing, and scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The case is good with a few minor cracks, numerous minor scratches and dings on the exterior. The lining shows some wear, stains and discoloration.
