Cased English Proofed Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with Accessories
This is an example of a factory cased Colt Model 1849 percussion revolver manufactured in 1862. The revolver has a four-inch octagon barrel with casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver plated trigger guard and backstrap, five shot cylinder and varnished walnut grips. The top of the barrel flat is "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA." and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS / PATENT". The left side of the barrel lug ahead of the wedge is stamped with a "crown / GP" and "crown / V" proofmarks and the same proof marks appear on the cylinder ahead of each nipple cut-out. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and marked "COLTS PATENT" over the partial serial number "12830". The left rear of the trigger guard bow is marked with the number "7". The matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap (with an "E" either above or below the number) and the partial serial number "2830" appears on the loading lever and arbor pin, with "12830" on the wedge and cylinder. Complete in a red velvet lined hardwood case with locking lid and five compartments with a eagle powder flask, two cavity brass bullet mold marked "COLT'S / PATENT", an Eley Bros. cap tin containing percussion caps, a key, contemporary blue nipple (1839 scratched into the sides) and approximately 30 round and conical lead bullets.

Very fine. The barrel retains approximately 70% plus of the original thinning blue finish with scattered areas of plum and high edge wear. The loading lever shows strong original case colors with the balance having faded to a smooth silver gray. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth brownish gray patina. The trigger guard and backstrap retain traces of scattered original silver with the balance having an even natural aged patina. The grips are excellent with nearly all of the original varnish remaining, some very minor lower edge wear and a few overall minor dings and handling marks. The cylinder scene is clear and the markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically fine. The case is very good with a repaired crack on the lid, a few minor dings and scratches on the exterior, and some minor contact wear on the otherwise fine original lining. The accessories are all very fine.
