Cased Custom Engraved Pre-War Smith & Wesson Registered 357 Magnum Revolver with Carved Ivory Grips
This is an attractive and interesting example of a custom engraved Smith & Wesson Registered 357 Magnum pistol that was shipped directly to an F.B.I. Agent prior to WWII. The Registered Magnum was the first production arm chambered for the 357 Magnum cartridge and served as an influence on all later large caliber double actions. Built to customer specifications and registered to the owner with each certificate signed by the company's Vice President, Douglas Wesson. The 5224 Registered Magnums made between 1935 and 1939 are virtually custom made revolvers and remain "state of the art" in handgun manufacture today. When Smith & Wesson assigned model numbers to all of their models, the Registered Magnum became the Model 27. This revolver Reg. #5272, is fitted with a Marble's blade front sight and adjustable target rear sight, with the top of the rib and top strap of the frame hand checkered. The sides of the barrel, frame and cylinder are decorated with broad floral leaf engraving with a punch dot background. It has the original pinned barrel, counter bored cylinder, and checkered hammer spur, serrated trigger and grip straps, and fitted with two piece ivory grips with an eagle motif carved on each side. Complete in a wooden case with blue lining, with a screwdriver, cleaning brush, mop, miniature FBI badge and brass FBI pin. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial and registration numbers, barrel length, blue finish and that it was shipped on September 8, 1939 to Robert L. King Federal Bureau of Investigation, Memphis, Tenn.. The letter also states that the gun was shipped with checkered walnut Magna grips and that the engraving and grips were done after delivery.
