Cased Colt London Agency Single Action Target Model Revolver with Factory Letter

This Colt Single Action Target Model revolver includes the factory letter that states the revolver was shipped to the Colt London Agency on April 18, 1890. The letter describes the revolver as a Single Action Target Model, caliber .45, with 7 1/2-inch barrel, blue finish and "rubber" grips. The revolver has a blue barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The top of the hammer is blued and the sides are polished. The revolver has the distinctive flat top strap with flat sides and dovetail mounted rear sight. The barrel has a block-mounted, nickel-silver, target front sight. The trigger has a knurled face. The butt is fitted with a swivel-mounted lanyard loop. The black, hard rubber, two-piece grips are checkered and embossed with the Rampant Colt logo in an oval at the top and the eagle and shield motif below the screw escutcheon. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON" in one line. "450 ELEY." is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel. The caliber designation "B 45" is stamped on the underside of the barrel below the ejector housing. London "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and between each cylinder chamber. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt "Three-Date/Three-Line" patent marking. The assembly number "526" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The serial number, "131388" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a British leather, luggage style case and accessories. The hard case is covered with brown leather and has a luggage style handle and brass locks. The interior has five compartments including two with covers and ivory handles and a 31-round cartridge block. The case is lined with a red baize. A red and black Colt Pall Mall Single Action Army instruction sheet is affixed to the inside of the case lid. The case contains: (1) 23 fired brass military cartridge cases, (2) ebony cleaning rod with brass tip, (3) pewter oil bottle, (4) key and, (5) screwdriver with ebony handle. The Colt Single Action Target Model revolver was a limited production pistol. Colt manufactured approximately 925 Single Action Target Model revolvers between 1888 and 1895. The table on page 252 of "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" by R.L. Wilson shows that only 84 of these revolvers were chambered for the .450 Eley cartridge. Cased Single Action Target Model revolvers are even more rare.

Very good. The revolver has been professionally restored and presents an attractive appearance. Nearly all of the restored blue finish remains intact and the finish is nearly identical to the original Colt blue. 'Feathered' polishing marks are present on either side of the front sight block and on the sides of the trigger guard. The frame screws and top of the hammer have the correct niter blue finish. All of the markings and serial numbers are crisp. Some pitting is visible beneath the finish on the inside of the frame and on the trigger guard and back strap underneath the grips. Almost none of the pitting is visible without disassembly of the revolver. The grips are in excellent condition. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The relabeled case is in fine condition. Exterior wear is limited to some scuffing on the edges and corners. The red baize lining is bright, clean and it shows only very minor wear. The Colt instruction label on the inside of the lid is yellowed but remains in excellent condition. This is a rare and very desirable Colt Single Action variation that as been expertly restored and would be a key addition to any advanced collection of Colt Single Action Army revolvers.
