Cased 1/6th Plate Ambrotype War Volunteer & Wife
Cased 1/6th Plate Ambrotype of an Early War Volunteer and His Wife. The confident fellow in this poignant image has the merest hint of a smile and is likely a Confederate cavalryman going off to war. His militia-style shell jacket has what appear to be nine eagle buttons. A vest and trousers of a lighter fabric than the jacket's complete the uniform. Light gold paint colors the buttons, a strip of piping on the collar, and a stripe down the soldier's pant leg. The supportive young bride in this image has a brooch at her throat bearing her husband's likeness. Housed in a gutta-percha Union case embossed with Cupid and a stag on both sides. The emulsion on this ambrotype is smooth and intact where such really counts; however, there are several small scrapes in a perfect oval suggesting that the plate was originally under a smaller mat.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
