No 248 for 100 shares to A.W. Hobby dated Aug 13, 1868. The Casco Gold Co. owned and operated the Red Warrior Mine in Alturas County. A very early organized publicly held Idaho mining company. The Casco Gold Co of Idaho Territory was funded out of New York, and was apparently successful from the get-go. But by April, 1869, trouble had hit, and not in the usual way back then - a lack of ore - but in the "new" way of today - the lack of available labor. An April, 1869 newspaper article noted the lack of employable labor in the Alturas mines. It seems most miners were doing too well in the Boise Basin mines, and even though the Casco and its neighbor mines paid $5 to $7 per day, it was not enough to draw miners. The name "Casco" refers to a helmet in Spanish. This mine not to be confused with the Casco Gold and Silver M Co. of Meadow Lake, California of the same time period. Rare. Herzog Collection.
