This carte de visite is a side portrait of General George Armstrong Custer (see image). It measures 2 3/8"x3 7/8". The front is hand marked "Gen. Custer". The back is printed with the Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries address and hand marked "Compliments of / Mr. C.D. Smith / Co. M. 5th Wyl" and "#978". The General was celebrated for gallant services at Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, Winchester, Fishers Hill and Five Forks, but is most famous for his command of the 7th Cavalry in action with Sioux Indians at Little Big Horn, which led to a his own death and command massacred.

Very fine. The image is clear with a couple mild spots, with the remnants of adhesive tape on the back (two spots at the top). Comes in a protective plastic sleeve.
