Width 2 3/8 in.

The Mdewakanton Sioux chief was the recognized leader of the Minnesota massacre of 1862. Dissatisfied with previous treaty agreements, the Minnesota Sioux bands rose suddenly on August 18, 1862, spreading themselves for more than 200 miles along the frontier and attacking white settlers. The fighting lasted six weeks and took the lives of nearly five hundred whites, mostly civilians, and an unknown but substantial number of Indians. Little Crow and some 200 to 300 tribesmen eventually fled westward. Little Crow was shot and killed by a white settler on July 3, 1863. Photograph by Joel E. Whitney, St. Paul, Minnesota with his studio imprint and titles. Reverse side is blank. Minor foxing in printed area, otherwise good.
