Carte de Visite Civil War Photo Album.
Carte de Visite Civil War Photo Album. This little 5" x 6" brown leatherette photo album with its two brass clasps and gilt spine, complete with tooled covers, may not look like much more than a a small family heirloom. But in fact, when one looks inside, it is full of legendary Civil War persons and heroes. The album appears to have belonged to a woman named Julie B. Paul, whose name is written in pencil on the inside title page. The title page is handsome and dignified looking, with gilt lettering and embossments; the album was made by "McKnight & Rutter of 724 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia." The next page contains a place for one to fill in the names of those pictured on each page; it has been filled out in pencil. There is space for 20 photographs in this album and 19 have been identified by name. Included among what were surely acquaintances or family are the following: General Ulysses S. Grant, President Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, General George Meade, and General Abner Doubleday!

Each picture is in excellent to near-mint condition. The outside of the album is still in presentable display shape with the major flaw being the spine leather has seperated from the backing; the inside cover is also loose. Otherwise, an intact and nearly pristine set of photos from the Civil War!
