Lot of four folding file boxes—three ACCO Files and one BOOSTER file—containing the personal and professional papers of Nevada educator and politician Chauncey W. Smith. First album contains professional correspondences from Smith’s work as Principal of Eureka County High School. File box material dates 1929-34. File box 2 dates from 1930-35 and includes newspaper clippings, professional correspondences as principal and Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction. File box three mostly contains material from Smith’s campaign trail in 1934 when he defeated incumbent for position as Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction. Several different varieties of his election cards advertise Smith, “21 years in Nevada—27 years in educational work—6 years a Deputy Superintendent of schools in 7 Counties.” File box four is a compilation of personal and professional documents between the dates of 1934 and 1937. The professional documents cover his campaign trail from the primaries to his work in Carson City. Personal letters are strewn throughout along with newspaper clippings and hundreds of correspondences. Taken together these four file boxes contain eight years, and thousands of documents, of a Nevada’s Superintendent of Public Instruction. Harriett B. Smith, Chauncy’s wife requested that all file boxes be burned after her death. Some of the correspondences in this collection include hundreds of campaign discussions with unions, educators, and politicians. Placed within the context of the "Great Depression Years" these documents provide numerous perspectives into Nevada history. Papers are from around the state, especially Eureka and Carson City. File boxes are labeled Eureka.
