Carson City,NV - Ormsby County - 1874 - Annual Report of the Controller of the State of Nevada :
W.W. Hobart, State Controller. Charles A.V. Putnam, State Printer, 1874. Made up of 12 "Exhibits," including "Receipts into the Treasury by counties and from all sources of revenue," "Statement showing the transactions in coin and currency during the ninth fiscal year," and a foldout attached to the inside rear cover of an "Abstract from the annual statements of the county auditors, showing the financial condition of the several counties of the State for the fiscal year ending December 31, 1873." "Auditor, M.T., Va City" handwritten on the top front cover, which probably refers to Virginia City, Montana Territory. Virginia City, built in a gulch where William Fairweather discovered gold in June of 1863, quickly became the commercial and political capital of the territory, with a population of 10,000 during its peak in 1864-65. Even after the seat of government was moved to Helena in 1875, Virginia City continued to be an important city in southern Montana. (Ref: History of Montana, Vol. 1, Sanders, Helen)
