Carson City,NV - 1973 - Journals of Alfred Doten, 1849-1903 :
Collection of 3 Volumes edited by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. Hardcover, indexed with photographs. Vol. 1 has 808 pages, Vol. 2 has 769 pages, while Vol. 3 has 707 pages. University of Nevada Press, Reno, 1973. Volume 1 covers March 18, 1849 to October 14, 1864. This includes his voyage from Plymouth, Massachusetts to the goldfields of California, his time with the Pilgrim Mining Company, the mining company's dissolution, and his move to the brand-new camp of Como. Volume 2 covers October 15, 1864 to March 22, 1865. His success and fall as a newspaper man coincides with the rise and fall of the Comstock. He takes a job as the editor of the Reese River Reveille while his wife Mary moves to Reno to take a new job. He remains in Austin, but finally "escapes," on borrowed money from Senator J.P. Jones, to Carson City. Volume 3 covers March 23, 1885 to November 11, 1903. In Carson, he works at the Enterprise and plans a return to success with the Centennial Mining Company. As his drinking continues, he reunites with his family in Reno. At nearly seventy, he receives a legislative reporting assignment in Carson, and is told by his wife not to return to Reno. When he is finally allowed to return, he proudly stays in Carson, where he is "no match for the bottle and time." Volumes 1-3 come in green colored-cardboard case, very fine.
