Lot of 4 Memorandums of Silver Bullion, all the black form (instead of blue for silver, red for gold). Deposits by E. Niles, who was chief clerk for V&T general superintendent Henry Yerington. These are all huge deposits, ranging from 3,751 to 13,865 ounces. There were political games being played at the time that meant smaller shipments had to go to San Francisco. The Mint Director at the time was also believed to favor the SF over the Carson City Mint. 1-3) Three mint forms without a mine location specified, but the assay is certainly Comstock ore (and coming from E. Niles). One form notes that the bullion is "Mint Unparted Bars," an unusual distinction given that the Comstock bullion coming in would all be a silver/gold mixture. Again, likely part of a political game being played. 4) Last Memorandum is identified as "Ophir Bars." The Ophir was the discovery site for the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. All 5.5 x11.5", folds, light wear. All signed by Wm. Byrne for the supt. Rare group issued just two years after the Big Bonanza discovery. The Comstock was booming.
