Temperance agitator, she was known for smashing saloons with a hatchet. Exceptional 5 x 7.25 cabinet portrait by Hall’s Studio, New York, of Nation wearing a sober, non-nonsense look and wielding her trademark hatchet, signed in ink above her head, “Carry A. Nation, Home Defender.” Three tack holes to top border, some trivial chipping to extreme edges of the mount, and faint silvering to the image, otherwise fine condition.

Best remembered for her attacks on liquor establishments in Kansas and other states during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Nation called her prohibitionist supporters ‘Home Defenders’—a moniker she adopts for herself in this sentiment to show her solidarity. A rare and wonderful pose from the prohibitionist and suffragist taken during the brief period in her life that brought her national notoriety. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
