A Well carved APOLLO ( Belvedere) MARBLE BUST 19th c. White Carrara marble, In a Classic Greek style, the God Apollo is shown with his head turned sharply to the left, wearing a tunic with a brooch. Voluminous locks of hair are intricately carved; there is a uniform polish to the entire sculpture. Size:26" h., 21" w. Condition: Very good . WEIGHT IS GREATER THAN 150 POUNDS.

The original Apollo , now in the Belvedere Courtyard, Musei Vaticani, Rome, was most probably discovered at Anzio in the late fifteenth century. It is recorded in the Vatican by 1509 and in the Belvedere by 1511, where it remained until ceded by Pope Pius VI to the French under the terms of the Treaty of Tolentino in February 1797. After being displayed in Paris at the Musee Central des Arts, it was returned to the Belvedere courtyard in 1816, the author is unknown.
