Carpetbagger Daguerreotype and Ruby Ambrotype
Carpetbagger Daguerreotype and Ruby Ambrotype Wonderful topical 1/4th plate daguerreotype, circa 1850, of a young man wearing a top hat and carrying a carpetbag. The fellow's doubtful expression and traveling clothes would suggest that he's either going off to college for the first time or embarking on an iffy career in sales. Two large scratches on the image do not effect the subject. There are also numerous small abrasions on the protective glass cover. Housed in a Union case featuring Roger DeCoverly and the Gypsies on both panels (Krainik 29). The case is externally very fine, however the interior velvet lining has splits and a 1" x 2" area of fabric loss. The second image is a 1/4th plate ruby ambrotype of a grim middle-aged man, circa 1860. The original brass mat and the front panel of a Union case are missing. The back panel of the case (Krainik 26) shows agricultural implements and products. Overall fine condition with excellent photographic tonal contrasts.
