Caroline Scott Harrison. Wife of Benjam
Caroline Scott Harrison. Wife of Benjamin Harrison. A.L.S., Washington, May 19, 1890, 4 pp., on Executive Mansion letterhead. Written two years before her death from influenza, to Mrs. J.S. Clarkson. "...How sorry I was to hear of your affliction. Yours mentioned that your own father was not well. I hope he is better by this time & your anxiety is relieved. I am sorry you will not be back before the section (painting) closes. I should like to see your birdies finished. I ordered a panel painted without the birds on & think I will give it to Sallie Elkins for her wedding gift. It is such a pretty thing & being painted on a glass panel, makes it so much handsomer. We (the scholars) are all working hard to get all we can done before Mr. Patki goes away for the summer. I am taking three lessons a week ...Mary [her daughter and secretary] is still with me. She has not gone West yet to visit her husband. Hoping to see you before long & with much love & sympathy, I am truly, Caroline S. Harrison." Excellent condition. With White House envelope partly addressed in her hand. Very rare example of the First Lady said to have begun the custom of the White House Christmas Tree. She was also a musician, artist, and former manager of the orphan asylum at Indianapolis.
