Swiss-Italian architect (1556–1629) considered one of the fathers of the Baroque style, best known for designing the facades of Santa Susanna, St. Peter's Basilica, and Sant'Andrea della Valle. Rare ADS in Italian, one page, 8 x 11, September 1, 1600. A credit note for 200 scudi for Giordano Nobile, who is instructed to take the money out of the deposit for the Cava Clementina project. Ink erosion to several letters throughout the main writing (not affecting the signature), otherwise fine condition. The ‘Cava Clementina’ was a project to canalize the river Velino near Reate, carried out by Carlo Maderno and Giovanni Fontana between 1596 and 1602 at the command of Pope Clement VIII. Maderno was the Pope's long-time architect, in charge of the work at St. Peter's and other churches in Rome. He also built several Roman palaces (including Palazzo Barberini), wells, fountains, and aqueducts. An exceedingly rare piece from this important architect.
