Carlisle Indian School Band 1901 Dickenson Pin Carlisle Indian School Band 1901
Carlisle Indian School Band 1901 and Dickinson College pictured on two celluloid novelty pins distributed for the sesqui-centennial held in Carlisle, PA. Both pins are unusual pieces of local interest to that area, but the Indian Band had finally come into it's own after being founded just 20 years prior in 1881. The Indian Industrial school was started to assimilate the western Indian into a white man's culture. Looking to teach the Indian children to play something other than tom-toms and wooden flute, the Carlisle School started the Indian Band. By the time the picture on this button was taken the Indian Band had become very well known and played for parades and concerts featuring any type of music from Mozart to Bach. The Dickinson College button is in excellent condition but the Indian School pin has one minor stain along the rim. Both have their original backpapers and are 1 1/4" in diameter.
