Carl Sandburg: Signed Always the Young Strangers
Carl Sandburg: Signed Always the Young Strangers. (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1953), 445 pages, green cloth with silver lettering on the spine and front board, 8vo (5.75" x 8.5"), dust jacket (in protective Mylar), housed in a green custom quarter leather slipcase with marbled boards and gilt titles & five raised bands on the spine. Signed "Carl Sandburg" on the half title page. Always the Young Strangers is Sandburg's autobiographical memoir of his youth in Galesburg, Illinois. This wonderful book recounts the daily life of the Sandburg family, recent Swedish immigrants to America when Sandburg was born in Galesburg in 1878, and Sandburg's childhood in a part of the country very much devoted to its fallen hero, Abraham Lincoln (a subject that Sandburg would revisit time and again throughout his career). The book is in very good condition, with minor shelf wear present. The textblock edges show minor soiling along the bottom edge, but the inner text is clean and the binding is tight. The unclipped dust jacket is good, with some chipping around the edges, especially at the spine head. A scarce signed copy of Sandburg's childhood memoir.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
