Carl Eisele (after), a bronze figure of the boxer Max Schmeling, standing on a rectangular base, signed in the maquette, the verde marble plinth with silvered presentation plaque, inscribed 'Ehrengabe von Wilhelm Murr, Gauleiter und Reichsstattalter in Wurttemberg, Stuttgart, 9. Oktober 1936', 15in high (16.5in overall), 10.5in wide This bronze was the honorary gift of William Murr (1888-1945) ('The Man From The People'). Murr was a powerful functionary in Hitler's Third Reich, becoming gau leader and supreme governor in the Wuerttemberg Hohenzollern. Following the end of hostilities on 8th May 1945 he and his wife escaped from Stuttgart to Austria where on the 14th May they committed suicide. Max Schmeling was world heavyweight boxing champion from 1930 - 1932 and promoted by the Nazi regime as the Aryan Superman despite the fact that he steadfastly refused to join the Nazi Party. In his most celebrated fight, against all the odds, he defeated Joe Louis at the Yankee Stadium, New York, 19th June, 1936, compensation to some degree for the later humbling the Nazi's received as a result of Jessie Owens' 4-gold Olympic medal triumph in the Munich Games in August of that year
