Carl Barks - Xerxes and Harem Lithograph with Double Remarques, numbered 90/250 (Carl Barks, 1980).
Carl Barks - Xerxes and Harem Lithograph with Double Remarques, numbered 90/250 (Carl Barks, 1980). Carl Barks produced his own series of lithographs based on oil paintings using the theme of "Famous figures of history as they might have looked had their genes gotten mixed with waterfowl." Often he would "remarque" the prints, meaning he would add an original sketch to the bottom of the lithograph. The "Good Duck Artist" did this extra work because he understood that the remarques were in high demand by fans. This print, number 90 in a limited edition of 250, is the only known "double remarque" example known to exist from this series. On the left, Carl Barks has drawn a sketch of Xerxes in bed with three of his harem. Xerxes comments, "When you practice polygamy, you practice, practice, practice!" This sketch is reminiscent of Barks' 1930s art for men's magazines. On the right is a portrait of a concubine with a C-clamp tightened down on her bill, with the legend, "Tattle Tale!" Can you imagine Donald Duck pulling such a stunt on the acid-tongued Daisy Duck? Wak! Carl Barks has rendered both of the remarqued drawings in blue, orange, and gold hues, using colored pencils. Xerxes became King of Persia upon the death of his father Darius the Great in 485, at a time when his father was preparing a new expedition against Greece, and had to face an uprising in Egypt. After quelling the revolt of Egypt, Xerxes soon decided to pursue his father's project to subdue Greece. In this scene, Xerxes is relaxing, at an advanced age, surrounded by his harem of bejeweled beauties, interested only in his game of "cat's cradle." The lithograph has an overall paper size of 24" x 30", with an image area of 16" x 20". It is in Excellent condition, signed by Carl Barks at the lower right. The lithograph was printed by the Jeffries Banknote Company and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The double remarques make this already scarce lithograph even more of a spectacular treasure.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
