Carausius, 287-293 A.D., AE antoninianus (4.31 gm.), Camulodunum mint, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right/Pax, holding branch, sceptre, standing left, RIC 301. Choice EF with even dark brown patina and good surfaces. While Diocletian was busy consolidating his power in the East, Carausius assumed the title of Augustus and held sway over Britain and parts of northwestern Europe. Rather than risk war by declaring himself sole Augustus, Carausius postured as the partner of Diocletian and Maximianus. This scarce coin of his "British Empire" was struck in the city now known as Colchester. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
