Captain McDougall’s Sioux Indian Beaded Rifle Scabbard. Captain Thomas Mower McDougall, (1845-1909), Company B, 7th Cavalry, was a distinguished U.S. Cavalry officer who fought in the War and later commandeered the pack train outfit at the Little Big Horn “Hilltop Fight” in June 1876. In December 1875 McDougall was awarded the rank of Captain and arrived at Fort Abraham Lincoln in Dakota Territory. He was placed in charge of the Company B Pack Train escort that supported Major Reno’s Battalion at the Custer Fight. McDougall heeded the warnings of the Indian Scouts and ordered a retreat, thereby saving many lives at the expense of his own personal glory. The pack train carried spare supplies of ammunition, food, and tents. He escaped death during the Custer Massacre. McDougall spent 18 years in the Dakotas and participated in numerous engagements during the Dakota Campaign against the Sioux Indians. It was during this time that he collected this gun scabbard among other artifacts. There is a copy of a seated McDougall in front of a wall filled with these artifacts including the scabbard. This is item is from the Robert Eckert Collection. The scabbard measures 66” long by 7” wide and is dated 1880 circa.
