J. W. "Captain Jack" Crawford was a young illiterate teen when his family moved from their home in Ireland to Minersville, PA. During the Civil War he joined the Union Army and was seriously wounded, twice. During his recovery, he learned to read and write and soon began to fall in love with the art of language. As a young man he moved to the Black Hills during the Gold Rush of 1876 and began composing more poetry. In 1887 Crawford joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. The partnership with Cody ended in Virginia City, Nevada, when in a combat scene staged on horseback, Crawford accidently shot himself. For years after that, Crawford often gave public lectures to audiences hungry for stories retelling the Wild West experience. Of the 2 items, 1 is a postcard featuring several different poems by Crawford. Postcard measures 5.5” x 3.25.” It has some wear, but features a song titled FAITH and Poem ON THE WING. 2) Is another card that features the poem “SUNSHINE.” Very little wear [Ref: Deadwood Magazine, 1998]. -59959
