Eimer 744a, Betts 552, BHM 165. Coinage alignment, Holed on edge for a suspension hanger, Brass (xrf 53% Cu / 47% Zn), 42mm, 33.8g. Captain Cook's Resolution and Adventure Medal, cherished by museums and collectors alike. Struck in 1772 and distributed on his 2nd and 3rd voyages among the South Pacific Islands and along the Pacific coast of North America. Cook wrote in his journal in July, 1772 "their lordships also caus'd to be struck a number of Medal…..to be distributed to the Natives of….and left upon New Discovered Countries as testimonies of being the first discoverers". The idea of a medal was that of Sir Joseph Banks and since the medal had the image of George III and his titles, we assume it was approved by the king. These medals were made before duplicating machines were invented and a crack developed in the die seen in the edge at 7 p.m. through the RC of MARCH. This medal was produced with coin and medal alignments. Cook had numerous encounters with the Nootkas along the coast of British Columbia where he traded for furs. There were 2000 copper and brass, 100 silver and 2 gold produced by Matthew Boulton. It was Boulton's first medal produced likely leading to the two die rotations. There are precious few specimens in private hands today. 1pc. EF. Ex. Toronto Coin Expo Fall Sale 2016 Lot 460. From the Geoffrey Bell Collection. f
