<B>Captain Charles Vernon Gridley Memorial Handkerchief.</B></I> Silk, singe sided, 20.5 x 20.5, with stitched on red-white-blue border, with printed portrait of Charles V. Gridley (1844-1898) surrounded by patriotic military motifs and banner reading <I>Honor the Brave Steve Gridley Did His Duty</B></I>, in fine condition. Though Gridley distinguished himself during the Civil War at the Battle of Mobile Bay, he will forever be associated with the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. It was at this battle that Admiral Dewey gave his famous command: <I>You may fire when ready, Gridley</B></I>.
