The Super Soldier serum is a fictional object in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a chemical solution created by Dr. Abraham Erskine to enhance the body and mind. However, there was those who sought to misuse it for their own personal gain in conquest as did Hydra leader, Johann Schmidt, who used an imperfect version when he captured Erskine, giving him enhanced strength, but at the cost of his appearance, becoming deformed with a skeletal-like red face. Erskine was rescued by the S.S.R., where he worked to perfect the formula with vita-rays to be used in Project Rebirth, a joint venture between Erskine and the S.S.R. to create an army of Super Soldiers for the Allies in World War II. The first test subject Steve Rogers, who proved to be a success, transforming his body to its physical peak. However, a Hydra spy Heinz Kruger, killed Erskine before it could be reproduced and with Erskine keeping the formula only in his head, the project was put on indefinite hold. Rogers, however, was able to turn the tide of the war on his own (with some help), and defeated the Red Skull, which put an end to Hydra and helped in part to end the war. In the decades to follow, the United States government, a new incarnation of Hydra, and Howard Stark have tried to recreate the formula to varying degrees of success. It created an army of Winter Soldiers for the Soviet Union and Hydra, while Dr. Bruce Banner and Emil Blonsky were transformed into giant monsters.
