Thomas Weir's 1850 Foot Officers sword presented to him by The Saunders Guards Co. 1 17th Regt Massachusetts Volunteers 1862 with accompanying documentation including a daguerreotype of Captain Weir posed with his sword, original 1911 copy of t presented to him by The Saunders Guards Co. 1 17th Regt Massachusetts Volunteers 1862 with accompanying documentation including a daguerreotype of Captain Weir posed with his sword, original 1911 copy of the Memorial History of the Seventeenth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and three ring binder containing additional information such as copies of his war department records from National Archives. Thomas Weir born 1827 in Ireland formed Company 1 at the outbreak of the Civil War which became part of the 17th M.V. Infantry, in 1862 was court marshaled on 3 counts. Charges include neglect to take proper precautions to guard against surprise, neglect to make proper resistance and leaving some of his wounded men and not making a reasonable effort to rescue them. His sentence was dismissal from the service. The sword and black leather scabbard show good condition. Inscribed on the brass throat, ricasso of sword marked W. Claubery Solingen, blade etched to both sides, shark skin and wire wrapped handle very good.
