This oil painting by the Chinese artist Canran Zhang dates to 2008. It depicts the former Chinese president, Mao Zedong, navigating the oar of a ship and waving with his right hand. In the background are the turquoise-blue Ocean and thunderclouds at the sky. The combination of dynamic brushwork and traditional subject bestows the painting with great tension.
