It is believed that while serving time in the Canon City State Penitentiary, a master blacksmith named Cox made this gorgeous presentation stick. A few years later it was presented as a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Kullerstrand of Ouray. Eventually, it ended up on display at store owned by Jack Benham, located on Ouray’s Main Street. This candlestick measures about 16.75”. The spike and hook are nickel-silver plated, the steel portions are shaded. The handle and thimble are solid nickel and silver. The entire candlestick is covered in fantastic engravings; one of the most interesting is the lovely and detailed heart on the thumb lever. Wilson and Bobrink wrote about this candlestick, saying; “this superb example is among the most beautifully and skillfully crafted candlesticks known. The large size, 16" and the use of solid nickel-silver, as well as the delicate inlays and detailed engraving are obviously the product of a mater blacksmith. A second, very similar but shorter example by the same hand is in the Victor Verity collection.” This stick is one of the finest examples known.
