Cannoneer’s stiletto with engraved graduations on blade, brass mounted, simple turned-wood grip, circa 17th to 18th century. Measures 18-1/4” overall with 13-1/8” triangular blade. The blade shows a heavy and dark patina with light to heavy pitting. The brass mounts show a dark patina. The wood grip also shows a very dark patina finish. Found in Mexico and of a style that could be Spanish Colonial or possibly Italian.Cannoneer’s would use these graduations on the blade to measure fuse, and the dagger was used both for self-defense and to clear touch-holes of cannon.
