Canada Sovereign 1916C PCGS MS-63
1916C Belzberg PCGS MS-63. This is a fully struck piece with great lustre and quite flawless surfaces. It is one of an estimated two or three dozen survivors of the original 6,111 pieces minted. The combined total of those in the population reports of the major certification services is thirty-two. Included in this number are the three known cross-graded examples by ICCS, as well as an unknown number of duplicate certificates from re-grades. Whatever the exact number of survivors, there seems always to be many more collectors wanting one than there are examples available. The two longest columns in our want list are for the 1921 Fifty Cents and the 1916C Sovereign. A newly discovered 1916C sold this summer in Melbourne, Australia for $93,000. We previously sold the current example in an ICG MS-63 holder as Lot 474 from the Mason Collection in our 2002 CNA Auction. The dealer who bought it had it re-certified as PCGS MS-63 and then sold it to Belzberg in a private transaction. The collector who purchased it from the 2003 Belzberg Sale has recently passed away, and this piece is consigned by his heirs. It is tied as the fourth highest graded by PCGS, with two MS-64s and one MS-65 graded higher. From the Mason and the Belzberg Collections
