Canada ~ Atlin,1906 - British Columbia Dredging Company, Limited, Stock Certificate :
Atlin mining district. Incorporated under the Companies Act of 1897. Certificate No. 62 issued to W. Hinckle Smith for 6000 shares on August 9, 1906. Signed by A.S. Innes as Director and C.E. Wilson as Secretary. No vignette or border, floral print on left edge with embossed seal at bottom-center. Uncancelled. The Mgr. was O.T. Switzer. The facility used a Bucyrus Dredge, had electricity, and employed up to 25 men. (Ref: Intl. Mining Manual, 15th Annual, 1907, p. 212) Atlin's gold rush began in 1898, when gold was discovered on Pine Creek, in what was thought to be in Canada's Yukon. Because inspectors initially believed the gold strike was in the Yukon Territory, claims were recorded according to Yukon law. Eventually, the Government Agent and Gold Commissioner expressed doubts about the actual location of the claims. This distressed the miners, who felt their claims were not being honored when it was clear that the claims were in B.C. and not the Yukon, and were therefore subject to B.C.'s laws.
