Canada - AR-51 Presentation Medal Upper Canada Preserved c. 1815. Very Rare
51 mm, 73.0 grams. Plain edge reverse without number. Obverse: UPPER CANADA PRESERVED Scene of the US / Canada border at the Niagara River (probably), with an eagle on one side & a beaver on the other. Reverse: A wreath. Around: PRESENTED BY A GRATEFUL COUNTRY within the wreath: FOR MERIT. Glossy proof or proof-like surfaces. The Upper Canada Preserved medal was struck by the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Upper Canada for "extraordinary instances of personal courage and fidelity in defence of the Province" during the War of 1812. The medal depicts the British lion protecting the Canadian beaver from a hovering American eagle. Flowing between them is the Niagara River. The inscription is: Upper Canada Preserved. The medal was never awarded because the war ended and the lyst of those entitled to receive it turned out to be too long for the society's limited budget.
