French astronomer and author (1842–1925) who authored several notable early science fiction novels, and several works about Spiritism. ALS in French, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.5, Observatoire Flammarion letterhead, August 2, 1901. Letter to a gentleman, possibly Dr. W. F. Pierce, an American psychic researcher. In part (translated): “I’m sending you a work that can be considered an introduction to Astronomy which I wrote especially for you. It…shows the interest, utility, and grandeur of the science of astronomy…I’ve been very busy with my observations of the planet Mars which is always so strange and fascinating and haven’t finished…I wish you success in your undertaking which is so humanitarian and worthy of admiration by all who desire the intellectual and moral progress of the inhabitants of our little planet.” In very good to fine condition, with a couple small pin holes to last page, uniform toning, small mounting remnant to reverse of second page, and light creasing and wrinkling.
