Grasslands Kingdon (Cameroon)
Fine Helmet Mask with Open work Headdress
Wood, pigment
Height: 19 1/4 inches Width: 13 inches Depth: 12 inches

The distinctive openwork top of this mask has multiple repetitions of the spider motif, which is associated with both wisdon and royalty in Cameroon Grassland thought. The face has typical enlarged eyes and an open mouth showing teeth. The varied patina shows evidence of substantial use.
A part of the openwork is missing at top center, with crack systems radiating diagonally from this area to separate two struts to the lower proper right front and two directly down the center back to that edge of the crest. There is a minor crack at the upper proper left center of the nape of the neck.

Provenance:
Bonhams and Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, lot 5004
Gary Hendershott, Little Rock

Shipping: Large Collectibles (view shipping information)
