Extraordinary Hand-Drawn War of 1812 Era “Cambridge” NY Two Dollar Unique Early “Satirical” Note
Cambridge, NY. “Andrew Paywell.” Two Dollars. April 12th, 1812-Dated War of 1812 Era. Unique Oval shaped “Satirical” note. Very Fine.
Unique. Unlisted in Harris. An extraordinary early American “Satirical” note. Completely created, drawn and Signed by Hand. It is clean and distinct looking with a blank reverse and a couple trivial deft sealed splits. Made out to “Anthony Cash or bearer,” and Signed by “Anthony Paywell.” Unusual (to say the least) Oval shaped, which may rank, if not actually be, among the earliest “Satirical” American Banknote issues known. This piece is unlisted in Harris and we have never seen or heard of any others like it! Ex: CAA Sept. 2002, Lot 1581 (no lot tag), where it sold for $375.00. It is important to note that the fact that this important, historic piece is completely created in such a superb hand and so exquisitely crafted, that gigantic fact was missed in the CAA catalog. A magnificent, highly important, historic early American paper money note!
