Union officer of the 1st Pennsylvania infantry. In 1864, he was appointed to guard Alabama Governor A. B. Moore and two others after they printed a newspaper article offering a $1000 reward for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by T. Lilienthal of New Orleans, signed under the image in black ink, “Capt. C. D. Mehaffey, 1st U. S. Infantry.” Some scattered light soiling, rank a bit light due to decreased ink flow, and a two-cent revenue stamp affixed to reverse, otherwise fine condition.
