Lot of 54. The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company began in 1864, when E.J. Hulbret discovered rich copper-bearing ore in Houghton county, MI. The town of Red Jacket formed next to the mine, which became Calumet. From 1868 to 1886, it was the biggest producer of copper in the U.S. From 1869 to 1876 it was the largest producer in the world. The copper markets rose and fell, and in the 1920s the company reformed into the "Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Mining Company." In 1968 it was bought by Union Oil Products and finally shut down for good in 1970. The earliest report book spans 1854-1864. The next is 1866-1916. The next is 1915, and go annually to 1927 (1921 is missing). The next report is dated 1943. They continue as 1947, 48, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67 (two copies). There are some miscellaneous periodicals, such as the "Family Album," and a pictorial of the mine`s history. Finally, there are 2 Union "Agreement" booklets from 1953 and 1965.
