The present Ottoman calligraphy depicts the basmala, an important Arab invocation, which stands at the beginning of almost every Koran Sura and translates to ‘In the name of the merciful and gracious God’. The version at hand is written in white letters on brown primed canvas, which is laid down on cardboard. The calligraphy is surrounded by a mat with gold decoration and a gilt wood frame.
The calligraphy shows some wear marks. The canvas has some scratches, and there is a small hole in the lower middle part. The overall dimensions, framed, are 48.5 x 95 cm. The image cut-out measures 45 x 57 cm.
