Calima Ceramic Standing Male Figure
Standing Male Figure
Calima
100 B.C. - A.D. 400
Burnished ceramic
Height 12 1/2 in. Width 9 in.

The radically stylized male figure is incised over much of the body with geometric patterns which probably represent body painting. He has a bulky circular nose ornament and holes in the ear area where ornaments could have been affixed. The unusually shaped legs probably represent tight cord binding which is still done among remnant indigenous groups in the lowlands of Colombia and the greater Amazon watershed. No similar published examples have been found, and the traditional Calima attribution seems reasonable. The condition is very good except for a minor replacement on the proper left foot.

Provenance
William Siegal, Santa Fe, New Mexico
