<B>Effigy Vessel</B></I><BR>Yotoco<BR>A.D. 100 - 800<BR>Ceramic<BR>Height 8 1/2 in. Width 5 3/4 in.<BR><BR>This vessel shape with twin spouts separated by a strap-handle is typical of Yotoco Phase ceramics. Although pre-European Colombia is best known for its gold work, there is a rich ceramic tradition with a long history. Many of these pieces are as much fully-realized small-sized sculptures as vessels, which is the case here. The rhythmically-developed body of this seated figure gains its formal coherence by conforming to the basic pot shape, enhanced by the maker's ability to inhabit these shapes with an inner, animating energy. The elaborate nose ornament shows a common use of gold, and the D-shaped eyes are a wide-spread convention in southern Colombia during the first millennium of our era. Cracks have been slightly filled, but there are no replacement areas.
