California Orange Crate Labels.
Two albums of over 90 beautiful, pristine orange crate and other fruit labels, most of them 10x11". Citrus labels were printed between 1880 and the 1950s and placed on the wooden crates in which the fruit, primarily navel oranges, was shipped. They were created by lithography studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and represented sunny California to snow-bound cities in the East. The fruits are shown in rich, lush colors, as well as images of Indians, padres, mountains, waterfalls, haciendas, animals, ships, lovely women, cute children, Queen Victoria, and more. Some of the brands represented in this collection are: Sunkist, Chapman's Old Mission, Redskin, Pacific Explorer, Polo, Popey, Pride of Valencia Cove, Reindeer, Rose, Royal Feast, Tom Cat, Unicorn, Silver Moon, Silva, Shamrock, Southern Cross, Silver Tips, Evening Star, Silver Moon, Morning Sun, Splendid, Sun, Vandalia, Victoria, Yo-semi-te, Yokohl, Airship, and many, many more. The owner paid almost $2500 for these labels over 25 years ago. They are a collector's item. Accompanied by a soft-cover book, "Orange Crate Art," a 94-page booklet from 1901, "Brands of Oranges and Lemons Controlled by the Southern California Fruit Exchange," and other articles and information on the labels.
