1857 This group consists of mopst of the contents of a nineteenth century California Masonic Lodge, possibly from a California Motherlode camp, possibly Downieville or Sierra City. It includes numerous 19th and early 20th century ceremonial pieces and three framed pieces. There are 27 stands and poles that were constructed together to hold fancy banners. There are 3 large white pillars and an arch bearing the Masonic symbol in the center. 11 banners that date from the 19th and early 20th Centuries are also in this lot. Other ceremonial pieces include 2 Arks of the Covenant and 21 other various ceremony pieces that include a holy grail. There are 3 copies of the “Ritual of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the State of California”; all 3 books have dates from the 1870s. There are also several related pieces including a lamp, Mason's black board. The 3 framed pieces include a high quality lithograph of the Masonic Home of California by Louis Roesch Co. of San Francisco (c1880's, 24 x 36", stain at right),a framed oil painting of grand master leonidas e. pratt 1869-1872, 24 x 31 (SF judge, 1833-1886), litho image of unidentified very distinguished male, 18 x 30". wooden models of mining tools. The Sierra Chapter of the Royal Arch Masonic Lodge Number 21 began on October 12, 1857 in Downieville. Although no longer an active chapter, the Masonic Hall which housed Lodge 21 still stands in Downieville today and serves as a reminder of the town’s past. - HKA#64905
