Cover sent September 1862 to Mrs. George Wallace in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Sent "Free" from Milton S. Latham, U.S.S. (which stands for United States Senator). This autograph is from Latham when he served as a US Senator for California 1860-63. He was inaugurated on January 9, 1860 as the 6th governor of California. However, less than a week into his term, he expressed to the State Assembly & Senate his desire to fill a Senate vacancy left by Henry P. Haun. He resigned as governor and was elected as a Senator, thus becoming the shortest-termed governor in California history at just 5 days in office. He lost re-election in the Senate and traveled to Europe, joining the London and San Francisco Bank Ltd, where he became the bank's San Francisco chief. Throughout the late 1860s and into the 1870s, he helped finance the California Pacific and the North Pacific Coast Railroad, earning recognition as one of California's rail barons. California
