Full Set Liberty Head Gaming Counters. Representing then-current US gold coins of $1, $2 .5, $5, $10 and $20. The $1 and 2 .5 have the same devices: "Compositions Spiel-Marke around a US-style Liberty Head // Spiel Marke (below a US-style spread-wing eagle)." The $5 has 12 stars above a US-style Liberty Head with "Spiel-Marke" below and the reverse has "Compositions Spiel-Marks" around a US-style spread-wing eagle. The $10 has eight stars around the Liberty Head with a similar reverse. The $20 has a similar obverse but with 15 stars and a different reverse which copies a US $20 gold coin. The $10 and $20 also have reeded edges like US Coins. The $1 is AU, $2 .5 is XF, $5 is F, $10 is XF and the $20 is XF. These spiel markes were gaming counters imitating US coins and were used extensively in California. They often imitate contemporary coins but leave out the correct legends or denomination to avoid the accusation of counterfeiting. Also four California Gaming Counters. These were used on gambling tables in California when the actual gold coins were in short supply. This is a group of four: a $5 counter, two different $10 counters and a $20 counter. The $5 features "California" above a Liberty Head above the date 1849. The reverse has "California" above a miner panning gold above the date 1849 and is XF. The first $10 features 12 stars above a contemporary Liberty Head above the date 1847. The reverse has "California" above a US flag above "Counter" and is F. The second $10 has the same flag motif as the first but this uses it as the obverse. The reverse features "United States of America" around a spread-wing eagle as on US coins and is VF. The $20 has the same US flag motif. The reverse has "United States of America" above the same design as on a US $20 reverse above seven stars and is in fine condition. Douglas McDonald Collection.
