Caliente,NV - Lincoln County - c1905 - Railroad Town Photograph :
This is a Stereoview vista overlooking the town of Caliente and the Union Pacific Railroad. Stereograph mounted on an orange matte with total dimensions of 7”x4”, medium contrast—tends toward grey, and focus is good. The matte is worn on the edges, slightly torn on the upper right and a section of the orange paper has been scraped off the lower left. Photographer, James J. Booth of St. George, Utah, was active in there between 1875 and 1886 (Mautz). The large mounds at the end of the spur track to the right of the photo are probably wood. Before Caliente became a railroad town, it was dominated by ranching. The first established ranch was the Jackman Ranch in the early 1870s, but became the Culverwell Ranch in 1874. The area subsequently became known as Culverwell, and in 1901, renamed to Caliente. The Culverwell Ranch made a portion of their money by selling hay to Pioche and Delamar. The introduction of the UP RR caused Caliente to boom as it was a major division point on the railway line. The town declined after the introduction of diesel locomotives in the 1940s.
