Calcite on Sphalerite
CALCITE ON SPHALERITE
Trepca Complex, Trepca Valley, Kosovska Mitrovica, Kosovo
Like storm clouds seen from above, groups of creamy botryoidal calcite crystals seem to boil up from the dark matrix below. The sharp, lustrous black pyramids seen below the 'clouds' are sphalerite crystals. Sphalerite: (ZnS) is the primary ore of zinc. There are two mines in the area that have been worked for many years, chiefly for zinc. Of the two, the Stari Trg Mine is the more likely source. As a result, this large and dramatic study in black & white can also be displayed as an excellent example of zinc ore. This decorative specimen measures: 13 ½ x 8 x 6 inches. It is in excellent condition.
